Undertone vs. skin tone

Skin tone is how light or deep your skin appears on the surface. Undertone is the subtle hue underneath: usually cool (pink or blue), warm (golden or peachy), or neutral (a mix of both).

Two people can share a similar depth of skin tone and still need very different foundation and blush shades because their undertones differ. That mismatch is one of the most common reasons makeup looks “off” even when the depth seems right.

Why undertone matters for makeup

Foundation that fights your undertone can look ashy, orange, or muddy. Lip and cheek colors that ignore undertone often feel either washed out or overly harsh.

Knowing your undertone helps you shortlist shades faster: cool undertones often suit pink, berry, and rose; warm undertones often suit peach, coral, and golden; neutrals can often wear both families with less clash.

Simple ways to notice your undertone

Look at the veins on the inside of your wrist in natural light. Veins that look more blue or purple often point cool; greener veins often point warm; a mix can mean neutral. This is a clue, not a rule.

Compare silver and gold jewelry. If silver flatters you more, you may lean cool; if gold does, you may lean warm. If both look good, you may be neutral.

Check how your bare skin looks next to a white shirt in daylight. A pinkish or rosy cast leans cool; a golden or olive cast leans warm.

How Glowmi helps

Glowmi’s Skin Analysis estimates visible characteristics, including tone and undertone, from a bare-face selfie, then unlocks a personalized color palette for eyes, lips, and cheeks. It is cosmetic guidance only, not a clinical diagnosis.

Use the analysis as a starting point, then refine with virtual try-on and look feedback so you can see what actually suits you on your own photo.
